Agri Personnel Briefed on P5M ‘Negros First’ Crop Insurance

Crop insurance regional representatives gave personnel of the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist as well as municipal and city agriculturists an orientation on the P5 million ‘Negros First’ Universal Crop Insurance Program (NFUCIP).

Joseph Cajilo, chief of the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC) Claims and Adjustment Division, said NFUCIP will help farmers recover immediately from crop losses due to calamities such as plant diseases, pest infestation, typhoons, floods, drought, earthquake, and volcanic eruption. NFUCIP will ensure that farmers’ investments are protected, he added.

BAFPS-DA Accredits NICERT

Negros Island Certification Services (NICERT)

The Negros Island Certification Services (NICERT) has recently been accredited by the Bureau of Agriculture and Fisheries Products Standards (BAFPS) of the Department of Agriculture, Organic Guarantee Officer Robert Gasparillo of NICERT said.

Based in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental, NICERT is the first organic certification body accredited in the country in compliance with Republic Act 10068 otherwise known as “Organic Agriculture Act 2010.” Renewable every three years, accreditation is required under this law to guarantee that the certifying body is competent to carry out inspection and certification.

Gawad Saka to Evaluate Young Farmer for National Award

The Gawad Saka National Technical Committee will be coming to Negros Occidental this week to validate the projects of a young farmer-leader vying as the country’s Outstanding Young Farmer/Fisherfolk of the Year.

Twenty-five year old Vito Binondo of Barangay Guiljungan, Cauayan will be evaluated by the six-member committee headed by Dir. Alberto Maningding when they visit his 30-hectare integrated farm at the Negros State College of Agriculture (NSCA), said Provincial 4-H Club Coordinator Ma. Elena Gumban.

Organic Certification Presented at Techno Gabay Summit

“When consumers buy products that are certified organic, they get more value for their money and are protected against fake organic products,” Organic Guarantee Officer Robert Gasparillo told participants of the 1st Regional Techno Gabay Summit and TechnoMart at Amigo Plaza Hall in Iloilo City.

He said producers also benefit from organic certification because they could already sell their products at premium prices here and abroad.

Young Cauayan Farmer Vies for National Award

A farmer-leader of the 4-H Club of Cauayan in Negros Occidental is vying for the country’s Outstanding Young Farmer/Fisherfolk of the Year Award.

Executive Director Larry Nacionales of the Department of Agriculture Regional Field Unit 6 informed Gov. Alfredo Marañon, Jr. that Vito Binondo of the town’s Barangay Guiljungan was chosen as among the nine national finalists of the 2011 Gawad Saka, a yearly search that recognizes the hard work and laudable ventures of farmers.

Be Organic Agripreneurs, Farmers in WV Told by Ramon Peñalosa

“Be agripreneurs. There’s money in organic farming.”

This was the call of established agripreneur and organic farming practitioner Ramon Dayrit Peñalosa, Jr. when he talked on “Business Opportunities in Organic Farming” at the 1st Regional Techno Gabay Summit and TechnoMart in Iloilo City.

Peñalosa, a Magsasaka-Siyentista (MS) of the Farmers’ Information and Technology Services (FITS) Center of Negros Occidental, urged fellow farmers to think of farming as a business venture. “As farmers, we should be entrepreneurs,” he said.

Negros S&T Products Showcased at 1st Regional Techno Gabay Summit

Science-and-technology-based products of farmer-scientists under the Farmers’ Information and Technology Services (FITS) Centers and colleges and universities in Negros Occidental were showcased at the 1st-ever Regional Techno Gabay Summit and TechnoMart at Amigo Plaza Mall in Iloilo City.

The two-day TechnoMart themed “Science and Technology in Every Product” featured Negrense products such as Monchito’s pesto sauce, honey mustard, onion red sauce and Asian salad dressings, pickled squash, kimchi, and coconut sugar.

FITS Centers, Farmer-Scientists Join Techno Gabay Summit

Ten FITS Centers in Negros Occidental will join the Regional Techno Gabay Program (TGP) Summit of WESVARRDEC to showcase and promote the best products of their Centers and their Magsasaka-Siyentista (MS or Farmer-Scientist).

This year’s TGP Summit, to be held on May 25 and 26 at the Amigo Plaza Mall in Iloilo City, will provide a venue for the FITS Centers in Western Visayas to explore a wider market, and share and learn ideas from their fellow MS and prospective buyers, said Prof. Joseph Edward Idemne, WESVARRDEC Director. To grace the occasion are Sec. Mario Montejo of the Department of Science and Technology and Dr. Patricio Faylon, executive director of the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCARRD), he said. FITS stands for Farmers’ Information and Technology Services while WESVARRDEC is the acronym for Western Visayas Agriculture and Resources Research and Development Consortium. “Another important feature of the summit is the conduct of a product development seminar, market matching, and an orientation on organic product certification,” said Dr. Cora Navarra, Coordinator of the WESVARRDEC Regional Applied Communications Group.

Barangay Nutrition Scholars Undergo Skills Training

To hone their skills as nutrition frontline workers, 22 Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) from five municipalities are participating in the five-day training in Kabankalan City, said Provincial Nutrition Program Coordinator Ma. Teena Acebedo of the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA).

“As soon as they become full-fledged BNS, they will help their respective Municipal Health and Agriculture Offices bring much-needed services such as Operation Timbang to the grassroots, she said.

She added that at present, there are 366 BNS in the 19 municipalities of the province.
