Negros Contestants to Regional FYDP Named

Seven college and two high school students from different schools will represent the Province of Negros Occidental to various contests during the Regional Achievement and Recognition Day of the Western Visayas 4-H Club Youth Development Program on February 25-27, 2011 at Punta Villa, Iloilo City.

These students qualified in the provincial elimination round held recently at the Social Hall of the Provincial Capitol Building in Bacolod City, said Provincial Farm Youth and Development Coordinator Ma. Elena Gumban of the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA).

Best Farmer of the Year (Corn) Simfrosa Masion of Brgy. Talacagay, Hinobaan

Rice, corn, and vegetable farmers from southern Negros Occidental received the top awards at the just-concluded Farmers and Fisherfolk Achievers Day dubbed “Pasidungog sa Mangunguma kag Mangingisda” at the Panaad Stadium and Park in Bacolod City over the weekend. Rice-based farmer Rodolfo Oray of Barangay Tapi, Kabankalan City, corn-based farmer Simfrosa Masion of Brgy. Talacagay, Hinobaan, and vegetable-based farmer Francis Jiron of Brgy. Calapi, Hinigaran were awarded as the “Best Farmers of the Year”.

These farmers devoted 75 percent of their total farm area to these crops, said Dina Genzola, event chairperson and Senior Agriculturist of the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA).

Sen. Jinggoy Ejercito Estrada will grace today’s Farmers and Fisherfolk Achievers Day dubbed “Pasidungog sa Mangunguma kag Mangingisda” at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City. Estrada, who is the chairman of the Senate Committee on Labor, Employment and Human Resource Development as well as the Congressional Oversight Committee on Labor and Employment will address about 2,000 farmers and fisherfolk during the 9 AM opening program at the Panaad Covered Court.

Cash of more than P600,000, 10 units of knapsack sprayers, and 300 green t-shirts from the Provincial Government as well as 53 bags of palay seeds and 30 packs of rice will be given out to the “unsung heroes of the land and sea” in the daytime raffle draw and at the 6PM awarding ceremonies at the Panaad Stadium, said Dina Genzola, chairperson of the event Steering Committee and Senior Agriculturist of the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA).
