Barangay Nutrition Scholars Undergo Skills Training

To hone their skills as nutrition frontline workers, 22 Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) from five municipalities are participating in the five-day training in Kabankalan City, said Provincial Nutrition Program Coordinator Ma. Teena Acebedo of the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA).

“As soon as they become full-fledged BNS, they will help their respective Municipal Health and Agriculture Offices bring much-needed services such as Operation Timbang to the grassroots, she said.

She added that at present, there are 366 BNS in the 19 municipalities of the province.

The first batch of 43 BNS from 10 municipalities completed their training at the Provincial Capitol Building in Bacolod City last week, Acebedo said.

BNS are taught food production, food fortification, food assistance, nutrition on maternal and child health, nutrition information and education, and livelihood assistance.
The BNS mechanics, overview of the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition, and community organizing are also discussed.

Trainees gain knowledge and skills on strategies and techniques in assessing the current nutrition situation in the barangays, concepts and importance of developing the BNS Action Plan, and how to fill up nutrition accomplishment report forms.

As part of their practicum, BNS hold actual weighing of 0-71 month old babies and pre-schoolers as well as conduct house-to-house interviews on the profiles of families.

“BNS play a key role in identifying vulnerable groups such as pregnant and lactating mothers, the aged, as well as children with below normal very low (BNVL), below normal low (BNL), and above normal weight,” said trainor Emily Omilig, District I Nutrition Coordinator of OPA.

Their other duties are holding the ‘Pabasa sa Nutrition’, campaigning for food production and environmental sanitation like the use of sanitary toilets, and helping reactivate non-functional barangay nutrition committees, she said.

Trainees that composed the first batch were from E.B. Magalona, Toboso, San Enrique, Manapla, Pulupandan, Don Salvador Benedicto, La Castellana, Hinobaan, and Pontevedra.

They held their practicum in Sitio Sibucao, Barangay Banago, Bacolod City.

The second batch of participants comes from Candoni, Cauayan, Ilog, Valladolid, and Hinobaan.

Part of the training pool are Provincial Nutritionist Alice Matti of the Provincial Health Office; OPA Agriculturist Victor Llasos, In-Charge of the Provincial Nursery in Victorias City; OPA Home Management and Nutrition Division staff; and other members of the Provincial Nutrition Committee (PNC).

The National Nutrition Council in partnership with PNC will hold trainings on Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) for three batches at the Simag Foundation Center in E.B. Magalona this week, May 23-27, and May 29-June 2, said Omilig.

There will be 24 participants for each batch that will include BNS, mother-leaders, and midwives, she added. (Vishia Tolcidas/OPA-FITS-Negros Occ)
