FITS Centers, Farmer-Scientists Join Techno Gabay Summit

Ten FITS Centers in Negros Occidental will join the Regional Techno Gabay Program (TGP) Summit of WESVARRDEC to showcase and promote the best products of their Centers and their Magsasaka-Siyentista (MS or Farmer-Scientist).

This year’s TGP Summit, to be held on May 25 and 26 at the Amigo Plaza Mall in Iloilo City, will provide a venue for the FITS Centers in Western Visayas to explore a wider market, and share and learn ideas from their fellow MS and prospective buyers, said Prof. Joseph Edward Idemne, WESVARRDEC Director. To grace the occasion are Sec. Mario Montejo of the Department of Science and Technology and Dr. Patricio Faylon, executive director of the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCARRD), he said. FITS stands for Farmers’ Information and Technology Services while WESVARRDEC is the acronym for Western Visayas Agriculture and Resources Research and Development Consortium. “Another important feature of the summit is the conduct of a product development seminar, market matching, and an orientation on organic product certification,” said Dr. Cora Navarra, Coordinator of the WESVARRDEC Regional Applied Communications Group.

She added that there will also be a Techno Forum where the audience can interact with selected resource speakers. “These sharing and learning activities will hopefully bring producers and the business sector to eventually work together towards a common enterprise agenda,” she said. WESVARRDEC’s partner-member agencies in Negros Occidental, among them national government agencies and state colleges and universities, will also join the Summit. FITS Centers are at the Philippine Carabao Center in La Carlota City, Office of the Provincial Agriculturist-Negros Occidental, Cadiz City, Escalante City, Valladolid, Moises Padilla, Don Salvador Benedicto, Kabankalan City, La Castellana, and Bago City. MS who signified participation at the TGP Summit are Jose Vicente Alemany of FITS Escalante City, and Rafael Monfort and Ramon Penalosa of FITS-OPA-Negros Occidental.
