Negros S&T Products Showcased at 1st Regional Techno Gabay Summit

Science-and-technology-based products of farmer-scientists under the Farmers’ Information and Technology Services (FITS) Centers and colleges and universities in Negros Occidental were showcased at the 1st-ever Regional Techno Gabay Summit and TechnoMart at Amigo Plaza Mall in Iloilo City.

The two-day TechnoMart themed “Science and Technology in Every Product” featured Negrense products such as Monchito’s pesto sauce, honey mustard, onion red sauce and Asian salad dressings, pickled squash, kimchi, and coconut sugar.

These products by Magsasaka-Siyentista Ramon Penalosa and Rafael Monfort were sold at a premium price because they are organic, healthy and chemical-free, said Edna Garde, Manager of FITS-Office of the Provincial Agriculturist.

Penalosa, an established entrepreneur and organic farming practitioner from Victorias City, was well-applauded by fellow farmer-scientists, exhibitors and guests at the Technology Forum for his talk on “Business Opportunities in Organic Farming – A Culture of Agri-preneurship”.

Also featured at the TechnoMart were dried and processed fish products of FITS-Cadiz City; and polvoron, pickled vegetables, camote and banana chips of Carlos Hilado Memorial State College (CHMSC) in Talisay City.

“Cheese-flavored taro chips were the most saleable among the products displayed in our booth,” said Dr. Denesa Lamique, CHMSC Team Leader.

Another best-buy from Negros was Virgie’s Organic Kwakoy in peanut and ube flavors, a product of FITS-Bago City and the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos.

The West Negros University Research and Development Foundation, Inc. also displayed engineering work that included low-density Biomass Charcoal Maker, Multi-Purpose Food Dryer, Bio-Power Up Green Fuel Additive as well as Power Herbs and Wonder Oil.

Prof. Joseph Edward Idemne, director of the Western Visayas Agriculture and Resources Research and Development Consortium (WESVARRDEC), said TechnoMart products with potential for commercialization will be identified and announced by the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCARRD) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) soon.

Idemne added that while there are already commerciable products, some still need to be packaged well to make it more attractive to buyers in trade fairs and exhibitions here and abroad.

“Because of the thrust in helping our Magsasaka-Siyentista, WESVARRDEC has partnered with the Philippine Food Exporters Federation (PHILFOODEX) for training on product development and market matching,” he said.

Some export quality products like the processed mango of Guimaras by outstanding regional MS Rebecca Tubongbanua, bamboo-based handicraft of Maasin, Iloilo, and muscovado sugar of Antique have already been assisted by DOST through its Small Enterprises Technology Upgrading Program (SET-UP).
